Former Student Nominated for Prestigious Award

Former student Katie Washington has recently been nominated for a young person of the year award with YOPEY (Young People Of The Year Award). Katie who studied at Beauchamp from 2005 to 2009 has spent years helping a charity called ‘Plan’ who work with some of the world’s poorest children enabling them to move from poverty to a future with opportunity.

When Katie was eleven she saw a leaflet highlighting the London charity, which really struck a chord with her, and she was inspired to write a letter as she wanted to fundraise for them. However this never happened as she was asked instead to become a junior member of the youth advisory panel. She has been very involved with ‘Plan’ over the past eleven years and last year represented the UK at UN workshops held in London because of all the work that she has done for the charity.  She gave ideas on subjects such as maternal health, and the eradication of diseases such, as malaria and HIV/AIDS.

Katie has also been involved in other humanitarian work and has had the opportunity to speak at the UN in New York and has met important delegates at UN conferences. She has also travelled to Brussels to take part in a big EU conference with development agencies and charities to discuss issues including gender equality. She has worked voluntarily with young people from the UK, USA, India, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia on youth empowerment and youth-led development programmes. During her time in Thailand she worked with young women and girls who had been rescued from trafficking. She led dance and drama workshops helping the girls to grow in confidence.

Katie has also led a campaign called ‘A Hand in my Future’ which was aimed at world leaders asking them to give a voice to young people in decision-making regarding the Millennium Development Goals which are eight international development goals that were established at a special UN summit in 2000.

From a young age Katie has felt the need to help others and has a passion for social justice and believes in trying to make the world a better place, particularly for people who are living in poverty and oppression.

Katie is now studying politics and international relations at Royal Holloway, a college in the University of London.  She now has the opportunity to win the John Lewis Young People of the Year contest in London. The event recognises and rewards positive role models across the capital and there is £2,000 in prize money for young winners to share with good causes.

We wish Katie all the best and congratulate her on all that she has achieved.

On Thursday 6 February three teams from Beauchamp will be taking part in the Business Language Champions regional journalism challenge called Scoop.

SCOOP! is specially aimed at older Year 12 and Year 13 students who are studying languages and who are also interested in international journalism, creative writing or design.

Each of our teams represents one of the languages taught at Beauchamp, French, German and Spanish.

Our teams will be against linguists from around the region. Working to a deadline, they will have to produce a sample front page for a foreign language newspaper. They will benefit from the opportunity to improve their team skills under pressure, prove their flexibility and above all put their language skills into practice in a modern day work context gaining skills that many employers look for.

The event will be taking place at Beauchamp and will include:

  • A newspaper challenge for which there will be a major prize for the winners
  • A keynote talk from Simon Hart, sports journalist with UEFA
  • A presentation by the students in their target language
  • An opportunity to talk to international business people
  • An opportunity to find out more about the possibilities of language study at university.

We wish them all the best.

National Citizen Service – Half Term

National Citizen Service – places available for 16 and 17 year olds this February Half Term.

Are you looking for something to keep you occupied this coming half term?

National Citizen Service can give you a boost in the right direction as you make the transition into adulthood.  It takes place over the February half term week: Friday 14 February through to Friday 21 February and 5 Saturdays in late Feb and March.  It is designed to fit around college work and revision and gives you the opportunity to grow as an individual and experience community action projects where there is a huge sense of satisfaction gained.  It is a government subsidised programme that costs just £35 each.  As well as the personal benefits on completion you get a certificate signed by the Prime Minister at a Graduation evening.

The programme comprises of three stages. In the first, we take you to an outdoor pursuits centre to take on challenges and build on team work skills. In the second phase, you take part in master classes, to develop personal skills and learn about the community. The final part of the programme involves giving back to the communities by planning and carrying out a social action project in the local area.  Over 70% of young people come on NCS as an individual – not knowing anybody else who is taking part – they leave with new friends and heaps more confidence.  If you would like to do it with a friend that is possible, you can make one friend request and the rest of your team mates will be new to you.

Places for this Spring are limited, please call or email to reserve a space.  There are opportunities for SEN and disabled teenagers too, please get in touch to discuss specific needs.

Tel: (0116) 240 7007  or Email: NCSEM1@Leics-EBC.org.uk

You can also reserve a place online by clicking here

Please use Promo Code LEBC33 in the box that says ”Where did you first hear about NCS”.

Over 600 local teenagers took part in 2013, with amazing results.  They raised over £17,000 for local charities and put over 7,000 hours of support into campaigning, revamping and fundraising for local charities and organisations.  To see some of the projects click here to visit our website and see pictures of the 2013 teams.

We asked a Mum of a teen who took part last year a couple of questions, here’s what Ryan’s Mum has to say about her sons experience on NCS…

WITH FOOD, TRANSPORT, AND OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION INCLUDED, WOULD YOU SAY NCS IS A VALUE FOR WHAT IT PROVIDES YOUR TEENAGER IN TERMS OF SKILLS, ETC.? IF SO, WHY?

“I think NCS is unbelievable value for money. For £35 you get all meals, lunches and accommodation for the residential.   Not to mention they had people coming in to do various talks and also the opportunity to do First Aid training.  I mean you could easily spend £35 on a few cinema trips and a bite to eat…and that would not even keep a teen occupied for weekend!”

WHY SHOULD PARENTS ENCOURAGE THEIR TEENS TO SIGN-UP?

“I can’t think of a reason why a parent would not want their teen to sign up.   It exposes them to organising events they may not get the chance to do normally. They learn how to work towards a greater goal, towards a social action project of their team’s choice.  They gain confidence in working in teams, speaking to organisations and this all helps boost their self-confidence. They learn that everyone has something they can contribute and everyone has something they can learn from others.

Even if their immediate friends are not signing up, it should not put them off. There are plenty of opportunities during the weeks of activities to make friends.

Ryan met people from all areas of Leicester that he may not have otherwise.”

For more information please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Tanka Poetry Workshop

Students who are part of the creative writing group recently took part in a tanka poetry workshop with professional poet, Paul Conneally. They worked in small groups to prepare poems on the topic of the Bosnian genocide.

Tanka poetry is a Japanese form of poetry, which has five lines with a strict syllable count per line of 5/7/5/7/7. You can read the series of poems below.

Bosnia is home
Islam is his religion
War moves him away
The soldiers keep them safer
Srebrenica is tranquil

The Bosnian Serbs
Think Muslims are different
They think they are bad
They are being killed for it
Women and men, boys and girls

Peacekeeping fails them
Killing and hurting follows
Leaving keeps them safe
This is their only option
The story of survival

Walking together
Searching for a better life
It is dangerous
Hassan, hiding in river
His journey lasts five nights

On the way they part
He is struck by exhaustion
Baggage holds him back
Companions help him along
Asleep while he is walking

Survives his journey
But many others are killed
Returns to his home
Reminding them what happened
So it won’t happen again

We have recently received a letter from MP, Rt Hon David Laws, the Minister of State for Schools. He congratulated the College on our excellent improvement in GCSE results over the past three years and that we are one of the top hundred schools in England to achieve the greatest sustained improvement in the percentage of pupils achieving five or more A*-C grade GCSEs, including English and maths.

Hugh Howe our Principal at Beauchamp said “I am really delighted that the commitment and dedication shown by staff, students, governors and our parents have been recognised by the Department of Education. Our work and the achievement of our students, year after year, has been acknowledged in our pursuit of excellence.”

114 Students To Have Work Published

Before Christmas, the English Department entered a number of students into a short story competition entitled ‘A Twist in the Tale’. Students were asked to write a story of no longer than 100 words which had to involve a character, setting, plot and a surprise ending (the twist!).

We are delighted to announce that 114 students had their work selected to be published in an anthology entitled ‘A Twist in the Tale: Stories from the East Midlands’, a copy of which will be sent to the British Library. This is a fantastic achievement and we are, once again impressed and inspired by our talented students.

I am therefore writing to invite you to the next parent forum on Monday 24 February from 7-8pm in the Refectory.

Transport Changes

The Local Authority is proposing a policy that would provide free transport to the nearest academy or maintained school only if this is over two miles for children in primary education and over three miles for children in secondary education. This is the nearest school or academy to the child’s home address, which has available places at the time when school places are allocated. It may not necessarily be the admissions catchment area school or one of the preferred schools applied for in the admissions process.

As I’m sure you are aware, the students in years 11,12 and 13 have been working hard to complete a trial examination series this January and in order to provide a realistic and worthwhile learning experience we have planned a ‘Trial Examination Results morning’, which will take place in college on Friday14 February 2014. Students will be registered by their tutors in the morning and will attend their first lessons with their subject teachers as usual. Teachers will accompany students to the Main Hall or Sports Hall where they will receive individual result sets in envelopes and appropriate advice and guidance regarding their outcomes. All students will have received their results by 10.30am after which the usual programme of study will resume.
