Following a very successful summer of sports around the Oadby and Wigston Borough, assisted by students of Beauchamp College, it became apparent to the PE staff how talented some of our year 10 students were at assisting and leading younger children. This year has therefore seen the introduction of the Sports Leaders Level 2 Course, as an extra-curricular activity for students entering year 11 who wanted to take this further and gain a widely recognised Sports Leaders qualification.
The course has 17 enthusiastic and committed students who attend weekly training sessions on Tuesdays after school and have set up and deliver weekly sports clubs at either a local primary or secondary school. The students have been faced with a range of challenging tasks so far this term to help further their leading skills and put into practice the theory they have learnt in classroom lessons.
In one term alone the students have planned, organised, led and officiated in five large sporting events, including our own house events, such as Year 10 Football, an event in which the leaders showed their ability to control large groups of older students and officiate fairly and effectively so that the competition was fair for all participants.
They also had to take on the task of leading events from within the local partnership for a range of age groups:
The first event they planned and organised was a Years 3 & 4 Multi Skills Event, where they designed stations to challenge the students’ fundamental motor skills. Jack Arthur and Charlotte Cooper were the Leaders selected to play the key organisers roles for this event. They did very well at organising the 80 plus years 3 & 4 students through the whole event, aided by the support of the other sports leaders, where they all showed the ability to work effectively as team.
The following week the group evaluated their practice and skills from this and redesigned the event for Years 1 & 2 where they led 60 plus primary students very effectively. Miu Yuk Tsui and Scott Brady took the key roles as event organisers where they organised all the leaders and participants clearly and effectively. Both these events where professionally organised and showed the leaders true ability to lead others, with a lot of positive feedback given by staff present from the primary schools.
Following on from their success so far this term, they were invited to help at the Oadby and Wigston Young Ambassador Conference, in which they trained the primary school Young Leaders. Yasmin Callan-Sidat and Zack Hurst led and the whole group worked well as a team to organise and run the whole event. By the end the Beauchamp Leaders had taken control of the event and were praised by the School Sport Project Officer who was amazed by their ability to work as a team, the way they communicated with the young pupils and their professional manner throughout.
With only one term under their belts the Level 2 Sports Leaders are already making their mark as Beauchamp Colleges Young Leaders. The Leaders have been a credit to the college and have demonstrated some really advanced skills, setting a high standard so far, well done and keep up the good work!
